Boat rental FAQ

Everything people usually ask before a day on Biscayne Bay.

Before you book

What kinds of boats can I rent?

Pontoons and tritoons for 10 to 12 guests, sporty bowriders for up to 12, and center consoles for up to 8 anglers. All boats are self-drive and leave from Downtown Miami.

I have never driven a boat. Can I still rent?

Yes. Book your boat and hire a licensed captain to drive. You relax, the captain handles the bay.

How old do I have to be?

The primary renter must be at least 21 and show a valid government photo ID at check-in.

Do I need a boating license?

Florida requires a Boating Safety Education ID for anyone born on or after January 1, 1988. Out-of-state NASBLA-approved cards are accepted. A 90-day temporary certificate is available online after a short test.

How far ahead should I book?

Weekends, holidays and the winter season fill up fast, so book at least a week ahead. Same-day rentals are often possible with 3 hours' notice online or 2 hours by phone.

How do I make a reservation?

Use the Book Online page, call or text (305) 873-7948, or email boat@miboatrentalservice.com.

What is included with the rental?

A full tank of fuel, all Coast Guard required safety equipment, life jackets for adults and children, a shade top, a waterproof bay map and a short orientation at the dock.

Can I bring food and drinks?

Absolutely. Coolers, snacks and drinks are welcome. Please leave glass bottles at home.

Where can I go?

Anywhere inside Biscayne Bay: the Miami skyline and Millionaires' Row, Haulover Sandbar, Nixon Sandbar at Key Biscayne, Coconut Grove, Stiltsville and Boca Chita on calm days. The open Atlantic is off limits.

After you book

Where do I pick up the boat?

At our partner marina on Biscayne Bay in Downtown Miami. Your confirmation includes the exact slip, parking and a map pin.

When should I arrive?

Please arrive 15 minutes early for paperwork, a walk-around of the boat and the safety briefing.

What if something goes wrong on the water?

Call us right away. Every boat carries towing coverage and we can talk you through most issues by phone.

Payments & fees

What payment methods do you accept?

All major credit and debit cards. Cash is accepted at check-in with a card on file for the security deposit.

Is there a security deposit?

Yes, a refundable hold of up to $750 depending on the boat. It is released once the boat comes back without damage.

How does fuel work?

You leave with a full tank. After your trip we refuel and charge only for the fuel you used, at the current marina price.

Is there sales tax?

Florida and Miami-Dade sales tax of 7% applies to rentals and add-ons.

Fishing & wildlife

Can I fish from the boat?

Yes. Rent our fishing package (rods, tackle, bait and a net) or bring your own gear. Everyone fishing needs a Florida saltwater fishing license unless exempt; see the FWC website.

What wildlife might we see?

Bottlenose dolphins, manatees in the warmer months, sea turtles, pelicans, ospreys and herons. Please keep your distance and slow down in manatee zones.
